Balance Transfers Can Benefit Consumers … But Only If They're DisciplinedMany consumers are bombarded with offers for credit card balance transfers and many of the offers seem like a good deal. However, credit card companies do make money from the service, so consumers should be wary of jumping right in. Balance transfers allow consumers to move their high interest balance to a new card with

If you carry large monthly card balances, this type of card offer is a great way to save money right away and long term especially if you don't switch cards often and are looking for one main card to use for the long term.

When you search and compare cards you should start by asking the following questions:

  1. When will the intro rate on the offer expire?
  2. Does an annual fee apply for the card?
  3. Will the introductory rate apply to the initial transfer only? Or will it apply to all transfers made over the introductory period?
  4. Will the introductory rate apply to purchases as well?
  5. What is the interest rate (APR) after the introductory rate ends?
  6. Are there any applicable transaction fees?

Some issuers will charge expensive transaction fees on balance transfers. Be sure to investigate any applicable fees upfront. You don't want to get surprised with a 3% or 4% transaction fee after the fact. Keep in mind that balance transfer offers are most suitable for individuals with good to excellent credit. Not everyone will qualify for the low "teaser" rate being offered on the card. Be sure to know what introductory rate will apply before you make the initial transfer. So, be sure to thoroughly read the terms and conditions of each specific card offer that you are considering.
