Transparent Credit Cards from 3M

by on May 12, 2007

You may soon be seeing credit cards in a whole new light – or, at least in the light that passes through them. 3M, which is the company that makes items such as Scotch tape, Post-it, and more, has announced a new material they have created that makes it possible for credit cards to be completely transparent

The infrared Vikuiti Clear Card Filter has passed all international standards when it comes to debit and credit cards. As a result, the card will offer exciting new marketing opportunities for credit card companies looking to set themselves apart from the competition. In fact, Visa International just recently approved 3M to manufacture a transparent inlay to be used on Visa cards throughout the world.

3M hopes that the card will provide the level of “fashion and functionality” that many cardholders seek, which will help the credit card companies gain and retain new customers. With the new material, the cards can be made to be more visually appealing and even more colorful. This, in turn, can help improve the brand image of the card among the company’s target audience.

Of course, using this transparent design opens up a whole new world when it comes to designing credit cards. Being transparent in of itself makes the card different, but designers will be challenged with ways to make these special cards even more special and unique when compared to the competition. In addition, the magnetic strip will still show through the card. As such, the strip needs to be worked into the design so it does not detract from the overall look of the card.

Solids, typography, illustrations, and patterns are all able to be used on the transparent card designs. In addition, four-color printing, which is typically used on credit cards, can still be used on the new material.

Despite being transparent, the material is still capable of reflecting the infrared light that is used by ATMs to detect a card. This is accomplished by laminating the special material over multiple layers of the new material created by 3M.
