Beware of Trojan Horses

by on May 5, 2007

It seems another warning is in order about never, ever, ever giving out your credit card information unless you are absolutely sure you are dealing with a trusted source. Symantec Corp. has issued a warning that a Trojan horse virus posing as a Windows activation program has been suckering innocent bystanders into giving up their credit card information. The message states that the user must enter his or her credit card information in order to reanimate the computer. Although the program is actually quite simple, even Symantec researchers admit that the creator did a good job with making the message appear legitimate

When the software gets installed onto your computer, it brings up a screen that looks quite official. This screen contains a message that your copy of Windows has been activated by someone else and that you need to reactivate the copy of Windows that you own in order to help prevent software piracy. The screen also requests that you provide your billing details, but promises that your credit card will not be charged.

If you select “No” when you receive this message, your computer will be shut down. If you select “Yes,” you will be forwarded to a new screen that will ask you to enter your name and credit card information. This information is then sent to the hacker who is free to use it has he or she likes.

This Trojan horse is affecting Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, and Server 2003 and appears realistic in part because it utilizes the actual antipiracy site created by Microsoft. In addition, there really are situations when Windows XP does need to be reactivated. It does not, however, request personal information such as credit card account information in order to complete the reactivation process.

So, remember to always check thoroughly into requests before ever giving out your credit card information. There are far too many thieves out there just trying to find any way possible to get their hands on your information.
