Brighter Planet Introduces Environmentally Friendly Credit Card

by on March 14, 2007

Soon, those of you that are concerned with the state of the environment will get to feel good about what you are doing for our planet.  Brighter Planet is introducing a new credit card that will actually help cancel out all of your earth-unfriendly carbon output with every purchase you made.

Similar to a rewards credit card, you earn 1% for every dollar you spend with your Brighter Planet card.  Instead of going into your pocket, however, the money is sent to Brighter Planet to be put to used to help protect our environment.

According to the company website, a small percentage of the money sent to Brighter Planet by the bank will go toward the operation of their business.  The rest of the money is spent on clean-energy products that the company supports.  These projects involve purchasing energy-producers that can replace those that produce carbon.  These clean energy producers are called “carbon offsets” and are purchased in your name.

The concept behind the card is that you can personally offset the carbon you produce with the carbon offsets you support.  The first carbon offsets the company will focus on are wind turbines, but it plans to expand its arsenal as the card grows – so who knows what the future holds when it comes to the difference you can make with your credit card.

One of the nice features of this card is the fact that you will be provided with a number of different tools to help you keep track of just how much carbon you are personally helping to offset with your credit card expenditures.  To do this, you will need to simply long in to the Web site.  Or, you can choose to receive regular updates via your cell phone or you can even subscribe to a real-time RSS progress feed that will give you real-time updates.  You can even include a progress meter badge on MySpace to help you keep track and to help you show off your concern for the environment.

The company has yet to announce if the card will be launched as a Visa, MasterCard, or some other type of card.  It is even possible that the card will be an American Express card, as the CEO of Brighter Card is the former senior vice president of American Express.

Although similar “green cards” have been previously launched in Europe, Brighter Planet is the first to be launched in the United States.  In addition, Bank of America has recently announced that it will be launching its own green card in the United States in the near future.
