Checking For ID Theft Online

by on January 22, 2007

StolenIDSearch.com, a new web site recently launched, allows you to check if your personal information has been stolen from your computer. A scary thought, but a very realistic possibility according to one news reporter that stated that nearly 50% of computer users will have some sort of personal information stolen from their computers at one point or another. The new search engine, created by TrustedID, claims to come to the rescue of those that have been wronged. By visiting www.StolenIDSearch.com, you can enter in the digits to your social security number or credit card accounts in order to see if the numbers are being compromised by someone else.

According to the site creators, there are a number of different ways this information may have found its way onto the Net. These include visiting a phishing site, the use of key logging software on your computer that keeps track of your key strokes (and passwords), or simply having your computer hacked into from the outside. By visiting the site and entering in the information, the site’s search engine looks in places that are not typically looked into by search engines to find out if your personal information has been compromised.

Of course, ever the skeptic, I think the site is a great idea but have my concerns about security. As the site says, it is unlikely that someone can use the information you disclose in order to steal your identity because you never have to give up your name in the process.
