Couple Charged with Credit Card Fraud and Conspiracy

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Ahhh…there is nothing sweeter than a husband and wife working together toward a common goal. And, who wouldn’t dream of going into business with their spouse and spending all of your time together on the job making your dreams come true?

Unfortunately, a husband and wife team out of Houston, Texs wanted to achieve this dream, but at the expense of others. A 32 year old man by the name of Sharif John Reid and his lovely 30 year old wife, Nandasharie Shiymangal, were recently indicted by a federal grand jury for their family business of committing credit card fraud.

According to United States Attorney Don DeGabrielle, the two have each been charged with two counts of credit card fraud as well as one count of possession of 15 or more credit cards that were either stolen or counterfeit.

The couple was originally arrested back on September 12 of this year after having a federal criminal complaint filed against them. Reid is currently in custody while Shiymangal managed to get out on a $250,000 bond, but both are to appear before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in federal court to face the charges against them.

According to court documents, the couple has more than 100 counterfeit credit cards in their possession at the time of arrest as well as 2000 credit card numbers that had been stolen from unsuspecting victims. The papers also charge that the couple used fake drivers licenses containing names to match the counterfeit credit cards and used these cards to make nearly $1 million in purchases. That’s right, one MILLION dollars.

Each of the fraud counts these two are facing comes with a maximum of ten years in federal prison as well as a $250,000 fine. The conspiracy charges, on the other hand, could result in up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Parole is not an option, as that has been abolished from the federal prison system.
