PORTLAND, Maine- Do you avoid areas of town that have parking meters because you simply don’t carry coins with you anymore? That may be about to change. Portland officials are close to finalizing a deal that would bring the credit card, and debit card, friendly meters to the city. The new meters will also still accept coins as well. According to Spokeswoman Nicole Clegg, the city will pay $150,000 to have 18 new meters installed in the spring. The Portland Press Herald reports that this is part of a pilot program.
Last summer the city agreed to buy the meters from Cale Parking Systems USA. However, after the FBI investigated allegations that an executive at the company gave bribes or kickbacks to an official in Portland, OR, in exchange for city contracts, the deal was put on hold. The meter manufacturer, Cale Group, in Sweden, is buying Cale Parking Systems.
