Hackers and scammers have targeted Facebook to gain access to the treasure trove of personal information that’s available on these massive networks.
“Social networking has one of the highest value credentials,” said Greg Singh, lead security engineer for BlueCoat Systems.
Hackers that gain access to a victim’s trusted “friend” network can exploit it for a multitude of criminal purposes. “If I get [access to] your Facebook, and you don’t know its been compromised, that’s more valuable because I can steal information, send malicious links, video and the like to your friends,” said Singh.
Hackers that gain access to Facebook accounts sell the accounts similarly to how stolen credit cards are marketed and sold.
