Discover Reintroducing Two Popular Cards

by on March 30, 2007

Discover Financial Services LLC has recently announced that it is reintroducing two of its more popular cards:  the Discover More Card and the Discover Open Road Card.  Both of these cards provide card members with an increased ability to receive cash rewards for using their cards.

According to her statement in a press release, Margo Georgiadis, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of the company, “The Discover More Card and Discover Open Road Card have distinct cash rewards accelerators that enable consumers to get more money back in the categories where they use credit.”

In order to do this, the Discover More Card (which used to be called the Discover Platinum Card) offers a 5% Cashback Bonus in categories that actually change every three months.  Some examples of these categories include home, gas, apparel, travel, movies, and restaurants.  This is meant to please those consumers that want to have multiple ways to earn cashback with their card.

The Discover Open Road Card, on the other hand, focuses primarily on gas and automotive maintenance purchases.  This card used to be called the Discover Gas Card, but it seems they wanted to come up with a name that was a bit more creative.  Nonetheless, the basics of the card remain the same.  For the first $1,200 the cardholder spends on gas and automotive maintenance, he or she receives a 5% Cashback Bonus.  All other purchases earn a 1% Cashback Bonus and there is no limit to the amount that can be earned in this manner.

The Discover Open Road Card allows for a fairly broad spectrum of purchases to be included toward the 5% Cashback Bonus.  For example, paint shops, oil changes, tire stores, batteries, auto dealers, part/supply stores, service/repair shops, car washes, and towing services are all included.

Another perk to these cash back credit cards is the fact that you can choose how you want to get paid.  Many cash back credit cards tell you how you are going to get paid.  With these cards, you can choose to have the money direct deposited into your checking count.  Or, you can ask to be sent a check or to have the money simply credited to your account.  Another option is to have the money sent to you in the form of a gift card to one of Discover Card’s partner merchants.  With this option, you can increase the value of your reward by up to twice as much as you earned.

Of course, Discover Cards have long been associated with offering some of the more unique cash reward programs.  In addition, all of their cards offer an extensive fraud protection program.  With no annual fee to worry about, both of these cards are an attractive option for anyone looking for a card that will pay them back.
