Disney Resort Guests Fall Victim to Credit Card Scam

by on March 9, 2008

People spending an enjoyable vacation at Disney World recently fell victim to a new credit card scam. Apparently, the scam artist called the resort guests, posing as a Disney employee, and told them they had won Disney tickets at a reduced priced. The thief then asked for a credit card number in order to hold their “winning” tickets.  The unsuspecting guests’ credit card information was then used by the crook to fund his own Disney vacation purchases.

One guest said she was staying in the Pop Century Resort in Disney when someone claiming to be a Disney cast member gave her a call. That person claimed that she had won tickets to the Hoop Dee Doo revue at a reduced price of $20 per ticket. The supposed cast member then asked her to provide him with her credit card information so the tickets could be held. Later, she discovered that her credit card had been charged $1,500 to purchase the tickets and, of course, she never did receive her tickets.

In all, eight other people fell victim to this scam and were taken for over $11,000 in charges. Even worse, investigators believe the scam somehow may have been committed by an employee of Disney.

Disney is providing its customers with tips for traveling safely and is also employing identity theft prevention measures to stop this from happening in the future. “We have placed information in resort rooms to remind guests to protect their credit card information while traveling and to inform them that cast members will never contact them by phone while they are visiting to request their credit card information,” said a spokeswoman for Disney.

Fortunately for the victims, Disney was able to get the money refunded to the victims whose credit cards were pilfered.
