Don’t Start Living Off Your Credit Cards
Friday, January 9th, 2009Adjusting to the rising costs of living is not easy for anyone. Just meeting a person’s basic needs can be a struggle from
one paycheck to another. Along with the increase in prices comes with a lot more pressure to make the right decisions about finances. For many, these decisions will include whether or not to buy basic groceries and other household necessities. In times of need, many people are forced into making poor financial decisions and end up turning to their credit cards for daily support. If you’ve found yourself in this situation, struggling with financial pressures, the best advice that anyone can give you is this: resist the temptation to start living off your credit cards.
Getting into the habit of using credit to sustain your daily life is far from a healthy habit. For those who are faced with a lack of money and seemingly no other choice to keep life moving forward and covering basic needs, credit cards will help the situation in the short term. However, it is the long term consequences that can be damaging. A general rule of thumb concerning credit is to only charge what you have in actual cash, allowing for a full pay off at the end of the month. When there is no cash left, it stands to reason that you do not make new charges on your credit cards. The reality for families suffering financial constraints leaves not many options. The family income stays the same but the expenses go up. If you are not able to keep up with the monthly payments, the debt hole only goes deeper.
If you are in a situation where you already use your credit cards to pay rent, buy groceries, and pay other bills, you might be in need of some additional financial support. There are plenty of programs that may help you manage your basic needs so you can remain up-to-date with your bills, including your credit card bills. Check with the community office that can refer you to help getting groceries, heating fuels, and paying your rent. You might also want to check in with a legitimate debt counseling company to learn the best way to pay down your debts and work out a realistic budget for you to follow to ensure you do not get in over your head again.
Credit cards were not created to be a life support system. It is urgent that every card holder practice good judgement when using a credit card. It may be worthwhile to use the credit card to your advantage to earn cash back or other rewards but if you can not pay your bill in full every month, you need to learn that to be a sign there is not enough money for the additional expenses.
