Double Billing Mistakes in Durango

by on January 6, 2007

This little story out of Durango, Colorado serves as a reminder as to how important it is to double check your credit card statements – even businesses with the most meaningful intentions can make a mistake

According to a story in the Durango Herald, thousands of dollars worth of purchases were billed to skiers visiting the Durango Mountain Resort between mid-December and January These billing errors occurred whenever visitors purchased drinks or food at the resort. While some people and some purchases were appropriately billed just once, many were billed up to four times for their purchases. In one case, a young skier that spent only three days at the resort was billed an additional $600.

It seems that the resort had a little glitch in their computing system, which led to the double billings. After realizing the error, the resort worked hard to correct all of the billing errors in an effort to take care of the mistakes as quickly as possible. Although the resort couldn’t say for certain how many people were affected by the glitch, they felt the number of customers that were improperly billed was in the thousands. That’s right, I said thousands. It appears that the resort has thousands of people visit every day during the holiday season.

So, if you haven’t already been checking your credit card statements at the end of each billing cycle, now is the time to start. Although technology can be a great asset, it is not without its problems. And, as anyone that has owned a computer knows, things can go downhill (pun intended) quickly when a problem arises within a computing system!
