Flex Your Muscles when Dealing with Card Issuers

by on March 23, 2007

I just had a personal experience with two different credit card issuers that I though I would share with those of you that enjoy reading this blog.  This goes to show that even those of us that are “in the know” about the credit card industry can run into problems.

Recently, I stopped using my primary credit card in favor of one that has a better rewards program as well as a lower APR.  As you can imagine, my previous primary card company has been sending numerous promotional materials my way in an attempt to get me back on their bandwagon.  These materials have been in the form of convenience checks offering a 0% APR on purchases made with the checks for six billing cycles.  Or, I can enjoy a 3.9% APR for the entire life of the balance if I choose to use one of the other checks.

My spouse and I decided to purchase a used truck and thought we might use one of these convenience checks for the purchase.  When I dug up the convenience checks, however, I found that the card promotion ended as of 10 days ago.  I thought it wouldn’t hurt to call the company to see if they were willing to extend the expiration date or to make another promotional offer.

After explaining the situation to the customer service representative, he looked up the checks only to tell me that they were expired.  I explained to him that I was aware they were expired and that was why I was calling to see if the date could be extended.  He proceeded to tell me that this is a deal provided by the marketing department and he couldn’t extend the date.

When I repeated the information in order to clarify, he got what I would call “snippy” with me and told me that he doesn’t have the ability to offer a special deal to me and the he cannot contact anyone who can.  I know this to be untrue and I did not appreciate the representative’s attitude with me and I let him know that.  Given my horrible customer experience with this card issuer, I then called another of my credit cards, and that representative was more than happy to work with me and to offer me a great deal on my APR.

The moral of the story?  There are plenty of credit card companies out there – there is no reason to feel as if you have to bow down to the mercy of just one.  You are the one with the power here.  If one isn’t willing to work with you, there are an infinite number of promotional offers available.  Give your business to the card issuer willing to work with you and forget about the rest.
