Video Shows RFID Credit Card Being Hacked

by on March 21, 2008

Technology today is certainly an amazing thing. At the same time, we have to remember that technology does have its flaws. Built by humans, it can certainly be unraveled and undermined by humans. As we adopt new technology to make our lives easier, we also have to be keenly aware of problems that can develop when using new technology.

There probably is no better way to illustrate this point than with this video I found online. In this video, you will see how someone uses a card scanner to hack an RFID credit card that they purchased off eBay for $8 bucks. The video demonstrates just how easily someone could use one of these easily obtainable, inexpensive scanning devices to steal the information from your RFID-enabled credit card without ever touching your wallet.

You shouldn’t get overly alarmed by every video you see on YouTube or on the Internet because, after all, it’s easy to put together a short clip that looks realistic. Incidentally, I have reported before about table top credit scanners used by thieves as well.

The more I read about scanning devices that can used surreptitiously in this manner, the more nervous I get about having a credit card with a chip embedded in it. As humans continue integrating technology with their personal financial affairs, dubious criminal activity will no doubt continue to pop up.
