Gas Rebate Cards — Are They Right For You?

by on June 18, 2008

With the price of gas rapidly approaching $5 per gallon in some parts of the nation, everyone is trying desperately to find ways to reduce the amount of money that they spend at the gas pump. Many people are purchasing hybrid vehicles and turning to public transportation as a way to cut back on the costs of driving. And many people are starting to look at gas rebate cards as a way to get back at least a little bit of the money that is spent at the gas station each year. But are these gas rebate cards a good idea for the average credit card consumer?  In most cases, the gas rebate card can be a great way to cut back a little bit on the amount of money that is spent on gas. These rewards cards offer you a percentage back for the gas that you purchase. This percentage ranges from one percent to six percent depending on your credit history and the lender that you get the gas rebate credit card from. This savings can be credited straight to payment on your card which ultimately means that you can get a little bit of free gas.

However, the gas rebate card is only useful if you’re going to pay it off in full each month so that you don’t get charged interest on the gas that you’re buying. Since the price of gas is now sky-high, many people are finding it difficult to pay for as much as they need. Those people who put the gas on a credit card and then carry a balance are spending a fortune more than they need to on their gas and the rewards from the rebate card aren’t going to cancel that out.

In addition to always paying the balance of the card off in full, it is going to be important to make sure that you avoid incurring any fees on the card. Always be aware of when payments are due for the card and pay them well in advance in order to avoid late fees. Be certain that you are always well within the credit limit of the card in order to avoid being penalized with over-limit fees. Knowing all of the terms of the card will help you make sure to get all of the benefits without any problems.

Gas credit cards are going to be right for you if you’re someone who regularly fills up the gas tank of the car and wants to get a little bit of that money back. They’ll be right for you specifically if you’re a responsible card holder who knows how to take advantage of a card’s rewards without carrying a balance or incurring other fees on the card. And they’ll really be good for you if you’ve already established a strong credit history so that you’ll be able to get the best terms on the card (a low interest rate with high reward percentages). If this sounds like you then you can probably benefit from the responsible use of gas rebate cards.
