Getting the Most from Your Airline Credit Card

by on November 1, 2008

Are you considering applying for an airline credit cardAirline credit cards can be a great way for you to earn some free travel.  But, in order to take full advantage of what these cards have to offer you, it is important to select the right credit card and to use it in a way that will help you reap the greatest benefits.

Before you even start applying for airline credit cards, you need to determine whether or not one of these cards is right for you.  For example, an airline credit card may not benefit you a whole lot if you do not already travel on a fairly regular basis. This is because you earn the most rewards with airline credit cards when you use your card to pay for travel expenses.  So, if you are not already a traveler, you may be better off applying for a rewards card instead that allows you to receive cash benefits or the flexibility to choose the type of benefit you want to receive.

If you have determined that an airline credit card is right for you, you need to take the time to explore the different types of credit cards that are available to you.  This is because there can be some significant differences between one airline card to the next.  For example, some airline cards have extensive restrictions that can make it difficult to use the airline miles you have earned.  Therefore, if you need a credit card that provides you with more flexibility, you should turn your attention toward one that does not have as many restrictions.

Regardless of the type of airline credit card you select, you can get the most value from your card by being as flexible a possible.  For example, by being flexible with your travel schedule, which airport you use and your travel destination, you will likely get more value from your miles.  It is also a good idea to book your travel arrangements as early as possible.  Or, alternatively, look for last minute cancellations that can help you save even more money and get the most from your airline miles.

You might also want to consider using your airline miles in ways other than obtaining free travel.  For example, you can use your miles to upgrade your flight to first class or, depending upon your card, you may be able to use the miles to obtain a rental car, hotel stays or to help pay for other travel arrangements.

Airline credit cards provide you with an excellent way to obtain free travel or other travel perks.  Just make certain to select your card carefully and to use the card wisely in order to get the most from it.
