Halifax Stops Accepting Credit Cards from Blizzard Sites

by on February 20, 2008

If you have a Halifax or Bank of Scotland credit card and you’re a World of Warcraft fan, you might be in for a bit of a rude surprise. Apparently, the banks have temporarily stopped accepting credit card transactions through gaming sites run by Blizzard Entertainment because of a surge in suspicious credit card activity.

“We have seen a significant number of fraudulent transactions through Blizzard’s gaming sites,” said one bank official authorized to comment on the situation. “We have, therefore, blocked the majority of Visa and MasterCard transactions we receive from these sites in order to combat this.”

The bank emphasized that Blizzard was not directly responsible for the problem, acknowledging that Blizzard did indeed have the proper security protocols in place. The problem, later identified, was caused by users who were “utilizing stolen credit card information to pay for subscriptions.”

Stolen credit card information used to make purchases is nothing new, particularly when it comes to online transactions, but the problem seemed to be correlated specifically to Blizzard’s gaming sites and no others. If Blizzard wasn’t the source of the problem then, the question remained as to where the problem originated. Are online gamers just more inclined to steal credit cards? Or is it because online gaming attracts a large number of younger people that may be stealing their parents credit card information?

While customers will still be allowed to pay for their subscriptions online with their Halifax credit cards, they will have to jump through some additional hurdles. “If a customer does want to subscribe to a game site operated by Blizzard, using a Halifax or Bank of Scotland credit card, we can arrange for the payments to be processed for them if they contact us directly,” said a company spokesperson.
