Hannaford Supermarkets Experience Security Breach

by on March 20, 2008

One of the largest supermarket chains in New England, the Hannaford Supermarkets chain, is in the midst of reissuing debit and credit card account numbers to several thousand customers. The supermarket chain recently experienced a security breach and many of its customers may be at risk for fraud.

The problem was brought to the attention of the supermarket chain when four of its customers came into the store and complained about their card numbers being stolen while checking out at the supermarket. The customers reported visiting different Hannaford Supermarkets locations within the chain, some claiming they had visited the Rutland location while others said they had been victimized at the Middlebury location.

After their numbers were stolen at the supermarket, the victims claim their credit card and debit card information was used to buy hotel rooms, gas, and many items online. The President of the Vermont Banking Association, Chris D’Elia, said that consumers can ask to receive a free replacement card if they desire. At the same time, D’Elia claims the banks are taking steps to pro-actively get a step ahead of the security breach.

So far, it is believed that at least 2,000 people have been victimized by the breach. As such, U.S. Rep Paul Hodes of New Hampshire has requested a congressional inquiry into the breach. Ron Hudge, the CEO of Hannaford, has also posted signs at the entries of the effected stores apologizing for “any inconvenience” the matter may have caused customers.

Let this story serve as a reminder that your credit card information can be breached anywhere. Even if you don’t let your credit card out of your sight, there are ways for hackers and thieves to get their hands on your information. Therefore, you should always be diligent about checking your credit account statements and bringing attention to any potential problem as soon as possible. Not only will this help you get things straightened out more quickly, you might also be saving other people from experiencing the same troubles.
