Seeing as nearly everyone has a Visa credit card in his or her pocket, it seems like it would be fun to take a look at some interesting Visa facts that most people are not aware of. For example, did you know that the name Visa stands for “Visa International Service Association?” In addition, the company is not based entirely in the United States. In fact, it is comprised of six entirely separate entities and each of these focuses on a different geographical area. In this way, the company is capable of meting the regulations that are specific to each region and providing offers that are more likely to be attractive to consumers in these regions
In addition, there are currently over 500 million Visa cards floating around in the United States alone. As such, Visa is the leading electronic payment brand in the country. Yet, there are no credit cards that are issued directly from Visa. Rather, member banks are responsible for issuing cards and for screening applicants for eligibility.
Not only does Visa dominate the United States, it is also found in over 150 different countries. In addition, there are over 20 million merchants throughout the world that accept the card. As a result, it is considered to be one of the most universal cards in the world.
In order to help keep its cardholders protected, Visa has created a “continuous monitoring” system. This system allows the company to identify suspicious activity to help prevent identity theft. The 3 digit code on the back of credit cards was also Visa’s brainchild. This code is another measure the company took to help prevent fraudulent activity. Of course, security measures need to be continuously evolving in order to keep up with the ingenuity of thieves.
