Knowing When to Use Your Credit Card

It may not seem like it, but there is a right time and a wrong time to use your credit card. If you use it at the right time, it could be a helpful tool in your life. If used at the wrong time, credit cards can be a nightmare. Knowing when to use the credit to your advantage is important. Otherwise, overspending can occur, leading to bills you simply can not afford to pay off at the end of the month.

Here are a few tips to help you know when to use your card and when you shouldn’t:

Major Purchases

Major purchases should be the main primary thing paid for with a credit card. Major purchases are things like electronics, furniture, and other home appliances. While you should be using your card for major purchases, you should not be making a large amount of unaffordable major purchases. If you need a television, you might pay for it with a low interest credit card, paying off a portion of it each month.  Try not to add additional charges to the card while you’re paying off the major item unless it’s for emergency purposes. This will help to keep your debt organized and easier to pay off.

Minor Purchases

Sometimes minor purchases on your credit card are alright, but you shouldn’t use your card everyday for all of your purchases. The debt can stack up a lot faster than you’d ever realize if you were to pay for things this way. Instead, use your debit card or cash for purchases like this. These purchases can include food, clothing, and other household supplies. Because most people make these purchases frequently, it is a lot more money conscious to use cash or a debit card to buy these things than to use your credit card.

Online Shopping

Most places online would like you to use your credit card to shop. If you are going to do this, try to either purchase many items at once, or don’t do it very often. Another option is to get a Paypal account. By doing this, you can pay with money from your actual bank account, or transfer money into your Paypal account, and never access your credit card at all. Credit cards are best used for large purchases, which online purchases usually do not count as.

Credit cards are important, but should be used wisely. If you use them all the time, your debt can skyrocket and the interest alone will likely swallow you whole. Instead, try to sharply monitor your overall purchase activity, and strictly limit the amount of purchases you actually make with any of your credit cards. If you do this, you can save yourself the debt, the trouble, and still use the cards effectively. Remember also that your credit card limit is not an extension of your income. Using your credit card effectively to gain things like cash back rewards can have it’s benefits, provided you can continue to pay off the balances at the end of each billing cycle. Credit cards do have their advantages if used correctly in that they can allow you to shop where cash might not be suitable and they give you added protection that cash doesn’t offer either.
