by on November 11, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Ca – Scams and cons exist in all areas and LA is not immune to either.  Being alert and aware is the first step towards protecting yourself against a scam.  Here are a few of the most recent scams noted in the Los Angeles and Southern California area.

Stolen Cards

A Costa Mesa man was arrested for allegedly stealing credit card numbers from Vietnamese immigrants living in Southern California.  Hung Van Tieu was convicted of conspiracy, credit card fraud and identity theft.  He was part of a team of con men.  The team called credit card companies, impersonated customers and asked for new cards to be sent to the addresses on file.  They then intercepted the cards from the mail.

Weight-Loss Supplements

The FTC recently settled charges against two companies for deceptive advertising regarding a weight-loss supplement ingredient.  The companies and individuals involved were part of a scheme that supplied an ingredient they claimed was a derivative of the African plant known as hoodia.

Chimney Sweeps

More than 380 complaints have been reported to the Better Business Bureau about chimney sweeps.  Scammers take advantage of the homeowners’ lack of knowledge about the process of cleaning a chimney and do little or no actual work.
