School Officials Forced to Resign for Credit Card Misuse

by on January 28, 2007

Stories continue to come out of the woodwork in regard to credit card misuse. A story out of Dallas, Texas regarding the state of leadership within our educational system and humanity in general.  Apparently, two high school principals were asked to resign from the Dallas school district, and a third is being reassigned, because of their abusive spending with district credit cards. It seems that one of these principals…

spent a whopping $236,000 on his credit card, including the purchase of four flat-screen televisions, furniture, a digital camera, a camcorder, four laptops, and a portable DVD player. Yet, this principal claims that he was a scapegoat because “somebody big has got to go.” (Just a guess, but it sounds like it could be you Skippy.)

In an age where teachers are losing their jobs in many states because of budget shortfalls, it doesn’t make much sense to me that a school district would even allow the potential for such abuse to occur. Nearly a quarter of a million dollars on a credit card is quite a balance to be carrying don’t you think?

The other principal on the chopping block actually surpassed the first one, spending $266,000 on the card. Among the expenditures was $6,000 for pizza. That’s right, $6,000 dollars for pizza. Just a tad bit excessive. In addition, he spent $781 on wedding ribbons (the frilly lacey kind, not the cheap kind) as well as shoes, and flowers.

The third principal that is being moved to another building had a paltry $76,000 on her credit card. Among the purchased items was $1,500 spent on book bags and embroidered Oxford shirts.

The district has stated that more people are likely involved with the credit card misuse. In fact, they estimate that at least ten employees will be facing criminal charges when all is said and done. Already, a district secretary was arrested in September for spending $78,000 on home decorations, clothing, and groceries over a period of 2 ½ years.

Aside from the alleged abusers themselves, let’s hope the school district board itself will be held accountable for letting this type of abuse to occur with such brazen impunity.
