More Tales of Credit Card Thieves

by on March 18, 2007

It seems that credit card fraudsters and thieves are problems our society is going to have to contend to for quite awhile longer.  Consider these stories, all of which were in the news on the same day.

Three teens in Russellville, Arkansas appeared in court to face charges of stealing credit cards from a man shopping at a Country Convenience store.  Apparently, the man set his wallet on the counter, but then found cash in his pocket and paid with that instead of a credit card.  When he accidentally left the wallet on the counter, the teens allegedly took the wallet and made purchases at a nearby Wal-Mart.  When officers reviewed the surveillance video, they found the teens using the card to purchase a $400 television.  The three then returned 15 minutes later in order to make another purchase – using a different credit card.

Of course, the teens deny involvement.  One claims the card was given to him and the other two admitted to being present when the purchases were made but denied having anything to do with using the car.  Either way, the trio sold the television to a Hispanic man afterward – seems awfully suspicious to me.  In addition, it seems the teens have been in trouble in the past.  In fact, the father of one of the suspects requested a higher bond because some of her friends were pooling their cash together in an attempt to bail her out.

Meanwhile, in Maryland, a Sheriff has had his credit card account frozen after he charged a night at a hotel on the credit card.  According to the County Finance Director, the Sheriff failed to follow proper procedures for travel and overnight stays.  Whether or not this was simply a mistake on the Sheriff’s part or attempt to defraud the county was not made clear in the report, though there is question yet as to whether or not the account will be permanently frozen.

In Canada, a Filipino man was prosecuted and sentenced to four months in jail for possession of stolen property as well as unauthorized use of credits cards.  The man plead guilty to five counts of unauthorized use of a credit card as well as one count for possession of stolen property.  It seems he stole a credit card from his roommate and spent over $1,600 on the card.  To make matters worse, the thief was in Canada on a working visa – there is nothing like wearing out your welcome in a foreign country.

Back in the United States, an entire city was the victim of credit card fraud when hackers managed to steal the credit card information of a Hartford, Connecticut card.  The card was used to purchase lingerie from Victoria’s Secret as well as flights to Europe.   In all, the purchases equaled $10,000.
