Now, this story really takes being lazy to a whole new level and it is really sad that this actually works. What am I talking about? Well, I recently read a story about a new scam that has been sweeping across North Carolina.
I don’t know about you, but I ignore those automated callers. I figure that if a company doesn’t have the time to have a real representative call me, it must not be that important. Perhaps I have missed some important calls that way, but I doubt it. After all, after so many failed attempts to get in touch with me, I figure they will finally have a real person call me.
Anyway, it seems the scammers are looking to get their hands on this information so they can commit identity theft and place charges on the victims’ credit cards. Thankfully, many people are are in on it and have reported the scam. In fact, the Attorney General, Roy Cooper, reports that approximately 20 people are calling each day to report the bothersome cards. None of these people have actually fallen victim to the scam, but who knows how many people actually have. The best way to protect yourself is to know how to prevent identity theft.
The Attorney General advises hanging up if you get one of these calls and calling the Attorney General’s Office. In North Carolina, this number is (877) 566-7226. If you live in another state, you will need to look up your particular state’s Attorney General’s number in order to find the number you should call.
