How to Opt Out of All Those Credit Card Offers

by on September 9, 2007

If any of you are anything like me, you probably find that your mailbox is filled with credit card offers nearly every day. While this is nice on one hand because you might be getting some great offers that are better than the cards already in your wallet, it can be a bit annoying as well.

Of course, I can deal with a minor annoyance if getting these credit card offers meant simply tossing them in the trash and never worrying about them again. But, this isn’t the case. In order to keep your credit score safe and keep your financial history solid, you need to be sure to shred these invitations to the point that they cannot be put back together and used by an identity thief.

It may seem ridiculous but, as I wrote about in a previous post, some credit card companies will still issue a new card even if the application is torn up. Therefore, you really need to go through great pains if you want to make sure these credit card applications don’t get used surreptitiously.

Even if the identity thief doesn’t use the application to get a card in his or her name, the information contained on one of these applications can sometimes be enough for the person to steal your identity.

So, what should you do if you’re getting all these offers continuously and you’re tired of having to shred them up every day? You can always opt out of receiving these offers. Legally, the credit card companies should be including opt out information on their invitations so you can learn how to opt out of these offers. But, if you haven’t noticed this information or if you shredded your application before writing the information down, you can opt out by calling 1-888-5OPTOUT. Or, you can fill out a simple form at http://www.optoutprescreen.com/

If you decide later that you would like to start receiving credit card invitations again, you can always opt back in. But, you don’t have to sit around and wait for credit card offers to come to you anyway. In fact, by getting online and doing a bit of research, you will likely find better card offers than any of those you will receive in the mail.
