Public Schools Accept Credit Cards for School Lunches

by on November 5, 2007

I guess I should have seen this coming, but it still shocked me a bit when I read that a public school in Michigan will start to accept credit cards for student meal purchases.

According to the recent press release, DeWitt Public Schools Food Service program will now start accepting Visa or MasterCard credit cards. In order to get set up for the service, parents have to simply log into the district’s website and register for an account. Then, using their user name and password information and clicking on “Account Deposit”, parents can readily make deposits that are charged to their credit cards. Parents can make deposits into the accounts of any children that are listed in their family school account.

I remember the days when I went to school and I either had cash or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. These days, students can charge meals to their lunch accounts or even have their parents set up accounts with credit cards. While this method is certainly convenient, my personal experience with the Food Service Department of my children’s school leaves me a bit concerned about this.

Before I’d sign up for my card to be charged to be charged with the Food Services Department, I’d first look into the methods used to charge the child’s lunch account. I have battled with my children’s school for years because of their habit of allowing my elementary school-aged kids to run a negative balance on their accounts. Furthermore, whether it was actually my children purchasing the food remains a question to me. As a result, I’ve insisted that our school go back to the old method of “cash only” when it comes to school lunch purchases. Even better yet, maybe it should be back to peanut butter and jelly.
