Today, I received an email that claimed to be from somebody by the name of Nolan Gamble. I didn’t recognize the name, but, as a professional writer and blogger, I receive an awful lot of emails from people that I don’t know. So, I opened up the email and this is what it said:
A URL followed this little message.
Seeing as I had never applied for any loans, I knew this email was bogus. Needless to say, I didn’t click on the URL. For all I know, this bogus link could have unleashed a virus. More than likely, however, this appeared to be yet another phishing scam.
I have mentioned phishing scams on this blog before. But, as a quick reminder, a phishing email is one that is sent out to people in hopes of getting them to respond in some way and give up their personal information. Even if this was just a spam letter attempting to get me to visit someone’s site, it was certainly unwelcome.
If you receive an email that you suspect to be a phishing scam, you can report it by following this procedure:
If using Netscape, Mozilla, or Thunderbird mail, select View – Headers – All. Then, select Message – Forward As – Inline and forward the message to phishing-report@us-cert.gov.
If you are working from Outlook Express, simply forward the message as an attachment to the same address. Or, if you are using Mulberry, select Message – Forward and then select the option of Include Headers in quote and click the Forward button, sending it to the same address.
By reporting every potential phishing scam, you can possibly help prevent someone from being taken advantage of.
