SeaMiles Offers New Credit Card

by on June 28, 2007

If you are dreaming of taking a cruise sometime soon, you might want to look into the new SeaMiles Visa Rewards card being introduced by SeaMiles.  Two and a half years ago, SeaMiles introduced the first cruise loyalty credit card in conjunction with Carnival.  This new card, however, will have a universal audience as cardholders can use the card to earn points toward free travel on any cruise line.

There are a number of benefits associated with the SeaMiles Visa rewards credit card.  For example, there are no blackout dates associated with the card and there are no restrictions, which is a problem that many airline rewards credit cardholders complain about.  In addition, the points earned with the credit card are treated exactly like cash.  Therefore, there are no pesky trade-ins for certain travel items involved with the card.

There is one catch with the card, though.  In order to cash in on the points earned with the card, the booking has to be made through SeaMiles or through one of its preferred agents.  If you have your own preferred agent, this may be a problem for you.  Other than that, this card is a great opportunity for earning cruise rewards.

Earning points with the SeaMiles Visa Rewards program is simple.  For every booking you make through SeaMiles or one of its preferred agents, you receive three points per dollar.  For every dollar you spend on other purchases, you earn one point.  Every 5,000 points that you earn is equivalent to $50.  The minimum you can redeem at any given time is 5,000 points, but you can choose to save up the points until you have a more substantial amount.

The points you earn with your SeaMiles Visa Rewards card do expire after five years from the date you earned them.  So, you need to plan accordingly to make sure you redeem your points before they expire.  Although President Peter Rooney claims points can still be redeemed after they expire, it certainly isn’t worth taking the risk that the company will live up to this statement.

There is no annual fee associated with this new card.  In addition, it offers a 0% fixed APR for the first six billing cycles after the account is open.  Furthermore, the reward points can be used toward airline rewards and resort stays if you prefer and simply being a cardholder helps you receive discounted rates if you are interested in a cabin upgrade.
