One young Special Olympics team was almost left out in the cold thanks to false donations recently made through their website. Two different five hundred dollar donations were made to a Special Olympics Equestrian team about to compete in an upcoming competition in Perry, Georgia.
Because this kind of fraud had never happened and it was hard to distinguish the fraudulent donation from actual donations, the team had plans for the one thousand dollars in question.
Just three and a half weeks after the donations were made, the team’s coach, also a volunteer, received a phone call from her own credit card company letting them know the charges were fraudulent.
While steps were taken to ensure this kind of fraudulent donation couldn’t be made via their website again, the damage was done and the funds were lost. Fortunately, a major hotel chain called America’s Best Franchising stepped in with a helping hand and offered a one thousand dollar donation to replace the lost funding.
