Indiana Announces Security Breach to State Website

by on February 9, 2007

It seems TJX isn’t the only place experiencing breaches in their computer security. Indiana residents now need to be concerned about having their information fall into the wrong hands. Today, the Secret Service issued an alert to Indiana residents stating that a security breach occurred to the state website that compromised the credit card numbers of approximately… 5,600 residents of the state.

Any Indiana resident that used his or her credit card to make an instant payment through the State’s website is at risk for having their information compromised by the hacker that broke into the system and stole the information. Since the state website offers over 300 different online services and completes more than a hundred million dollars in transactions every year, it is easy to see why the site was an attractive one for a hacker.

But, unlike TJX, the state actually had a contingency plan in place in the event of such an occurrence. The state claims that the problem has already been fixed and that consumers can feel safe using the site once again. In addition, the state wasted no time notifying customers, unlike TJX, which waited several weeks before announcing the breach.

If you happen to be someone that used the state website recently or that received a letter from the Secret Service, you are encouraged to call to learn more.
