Web Site Offers Stolen Credit Card Information for Sale

by on June 25, 2007

The more I delve into the world of credit card fraud and thievery, the more I am disturbed by the extensive criminal network that has developed and continues to explode.  The audacity of some of these criminals networks is simply mind-blowing.

Recently, I read an article about an online store that actually sells stolen credit card information to those that are interested.  Amazingly, the store has a database containing the information on a mindboggling 500,000 credit cards.  In addition, the site is updated anywhere from four to five times per day.

According to the store’s website, 97% to 100% of the credit card information is guaranteed to be valid.  And, in an effort to be seen as an honest businessmen (I say with a sarcastic tone), the site promises to replace any invalid credit card for no additional charge.  That sure is kind of them, considering the card information only costs anywhere from $2 to $5 per card.  That’s right – just $2 to $5!

Amazingly, the site looks like any other ecommerce site out there would look like - including having a shopping cart that the thief can place into before checking out.  In order to pay for the transaction, the thieves first sign up anonymously and set up a fund with an e-currency transfer.  Once the thief confirms the purchase, the money is automatically deducted from the fund.

While shopping on this website, thieves have a number of credit card options to browse through.  They first select the country they want the card to be from, having options such as the United States, the UK, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Switzerland, and Belgium.  They then choose the type of card they wish to purchase and the number of cards they want to buy.

Obviously, authorities are working to shut down this site.  Why it is taking so long to do so is beyond my comprehension.
