McDonald’s Employee Steals Card Numbers

by on December 19, 2006

Well, it would seem like there is yet one more reason to avoid eating at fast food restaurants. Not only is the food bad for your health, making purchases there can be bad for your financial health as well. It seems that a New Hampshire teenager was recently charged with stealing credit card numbers of customers at a local McDonald’s and then using the stolen numbers to rack up over $2,000 worth of fraudulent purchases.

I bet you thought it was great when fast food joints started accepting credit cards, huh? While exceptionally convenient, it does allow your credit card to be briefly out of your site – particularly if you are making your purchases through the drive through. This small window of time is plenty of time for a conniving criminal to steal credit card numbers.

With the credit card numbers, the teenager bought himself a new X-Box game system (surprise!) as well as a number of other electronic gadgetry. Apparently, he memorized some of the numbers on each card and then wrote down the rest. The kid managed to pull this off with four different customer’s credit cards. But one of the customer’s noticed unauthorized charges on her monthly bill and reported the suspicious activity to police. Not long after, the genius was arrested.

The teen also managed to get his aunt caught up in the scandal. Apparently, he had the stolen merchandise sent to her home address. According to police, the aunt knew the items were stolen but “didn’t know” that the teen was using stolen credit cards to acquire them. Like it really matters … Both are being charged with Class A felonies; the teenager is being charged with fraudulent use of a credit card and the aunt’s been charged with receiving stolen property.

Both our currently out on bail, probably working part-time, allegedly attending night classes at the local junior college and, more than likely, smoking a ton of pot.
