Teacher Used Union-Issued Credit Card to Fund Gambling

by on November 20, 2007

Teachers don’t get paid a whole lot, but this story out of New Jersey is over the top. It seems that a teacher in Camden, New Jersey, and also the president of the local teacher’s union in her school district, tried to use a union-issued credit card to fund her gambling habit, ultimately trying to pass the tab down for the teacher’s union to cover.

In addition to teaching, this Camden Education Association union president was an avid gambler. While the 66 year old teacher served in her Teacher gambles union money awayposition from 2000 to 2006, she was also using a union-issued credit card to help fund her alleged addiction to gambling. According to prosecutors, she visited a variety of Atlantic City casinos and racked up somewhere around $15,000 in expenses during her 26 visits.

The teacher was originally confronted by union officials, at which time she repaid $7,467 of her gambling debt. She didn’t bother to pay the rest, however, and was recently indicted on charges. If convicted, she could face up to $15,000 in fines as well as up to five years in prison.

Not to overstate the obvious, but using a company-issued credit card to fund your gambling activities is never a good idea.
