Teens Steal Parents Credit Cards to Gamble Online

by on September 6, 2007

Online gambling is a popular pastime for many people. As such, the online gambling industry continues to grow at a rapid rate. While there are plenty of people that manage to engage in this activity and to stay out of trouble, there are some people that have difficulty controlling their gambling. When you mix this personality trait with credit cards, you can have a very bad combination that can lead to financial disaster.

According to a report out of the United Kingdom, the results are even worse when you mix teenagers with the anonymity of the Internet with gambling and credit cards. Since there isn’t any real means for confirming a person’s identity online, increasing numbers of teens are snagging their parents credit cards and hitting the gaming tables online.

In order to start gambling, teens only need to know the credit card account number and know a few pieces of information that they’re already likely to know since they are your children, such as your mother’s maiden name. Teens have been found guilty of fraudulently using credit cards to make purchases online for sometime now. But, according to industry experts, the number of teens engaging in online gambling with their parent’s cards is steadily increasing.

Since many teens do not completely comprehend how credit cards work or have an understanding of responsible spending, then have an even greater tendency to overspend when using their parent’s credit cards. The issue has become so problematic that a charity has actually been established to work toward teaching teens how to spend responsibly. One focus of this organization is to help teens better understand the consequences of gambling online.

Of course, the organization can teach teens all it wants, but it won’t make a difference if they aren’t listening or taking responsibility upon themselves to avoid overspending. It really makes me wonder what this world has come to when parents have to worry about their own kids snagging their credit card and spending online. Maybe these kids don’t understand responsible spending, but they certainly have to know that stealing the cards in the first place is wrong.
