i work for a non-profit, credit counseling agency that has been around since the early 90s and I've seen the industry change over the course of the past 20 years. The one disturbing trend that I've found throughout the years is that a lot of debt settlement companies are advertising themselves as credit counselors when in-fact they are very much a debt settlement organization that is purely focused on revenue, kickbacks and other unscrupulous tactics to get money out of the poor consumers that are already struggling to make ends meet.

Kim-

The legitimate credit counselers (such as yourself) have never been more important. I can't imagine there will be a shortage of business for you in the near future.

Thank you for this really important post. I work for a nonprofit credit counseling agency that was founded in 1958. You advice is much needed and I appreciate you bringing attention to the topic.
