If you are a Mac user that frequents adult websites, you had better proceed with caution. According to a recent report, a new Trojan horse virus was released on Halloween that’s meant to play tricks on those looking for treats at pornographic websites.
The Trojan works by infecting the computer and taking over the DNS settings. After taking over the settings, it translates certain URLs into a server’s physical address. It can then redirect the user automatically to sites such as eBay, PayPal as well as fake bank websites that make it possible for someone else to acquire the user’s login and password information. With this information compromised, the user can easily become the victim of financial fraud.
The developers of this Trojan have been working hard to draw traffic to their porn sites so they can obtain this information. According to reports, a huge amount of spam has been posted on a variety of Mac forums in hopes of drawing visitors there. Once users arrive at the sites, they see still photos that are supposed to be from the videos. If the user clicks on these photos in hopes of viewing the videos, he or she will be redirected to a new web page that says:
“Quicktime Player is unable to play movie file. Please click here to download new version of codec.”
Experts report that this Trojan scam was created by a group of cyber-criminals and that it is the first time a real attack has been made on Mac users through a professional crime network. So, if you have a Mac or know someone that does, beware of this latest scam and keep your financial information safe and secure.
