Tucson residents have recently been alerted about criminals that have already victimized many people in the region. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued an official public warning only a few days ago about a credit card scam that bilks its victims out of personal information.
When the victim denies having made the claim, the caller tells the victim that he will send a credit through the mail. Adding to the validity of the claim, the fraudster is able to tell the victim his or her address. This is because the crook already has all of the credit card information he needs to use the credit card – except for the last three numbers that are located on the back of the card.
The fraudster is slick, however, and does not actually ask for this information until the end of the conversation. Rather, the caller promises to send the credited amount to the victim and to launch a fraud investigation. The caller also tells the victim to call the 1-800 number on the back of the card if he or she has any questions. The caller even provides the victim with a six digit confirmation number to use when checking in on the investigation!
At the end of the conversation, the caller asks for the last three numbers on the back of the credit card in order to make sure the victim actually has the credit card in his or her possession. Once you give this information, the crook can easily use your credit card to make fraudulent purchases over the Internet and on the phone. Therefore, it is essential that you do not provide a caller with this information. The reality is that Visa and MasterCard will not actually ask you to provide information from your card if you really are a victim of fraud. Instead of giving out information if you are called with such a phone call, tell the caller you will call Visa or MasterCard directly in order to verify the fraudulent charges and then make a report to your local police.
