While browsing through YouTube, I decided to take a look at videos having to do with credit cards and other financial matters. While some were quite boring or contained incorrect information, I did stumble upon a few gems that I thought I would share. The first one is a humorous little clip called “Credit Charges 101,” which was posted by a guy that calls himself gradualreport.
Gradual report isn’t your typical teacher. In fact, his videos are a little on the inappropriate side. But, they are certainly funny to watch and, if you pay close attention you can pick out some true words of wisdom. Check out this video about how to get charges dropped from your credit card (Warning: gradualreport does use some mildly offensive language as well as “bleeped out” words, though it is quite obvious what he is trying to say. So, if you are easily offended, you might want to steer clear of this video).
Although gradualreport offers his advice in a tongue-in-cheek manner and he was hardly “respectful” toward the fictional customer service representative, some of his key points are quite true. For example, if you are trying to get charges dropped from your credit card, you should:
- · Be firm with the customer service representative and state precisely what charges you want to have dropped and why you feel they should be dropped
- · Demonstrate why you are a valuable customer, such as pointing out that you have an outstanding payment history with the credit card, that you use your card frequently and help them earn interest or simply that you have been a longstanding customer
- · Ask to talk to a manager if you are not getting anywhere with the representative
If you call the credit card company and you sound wishy-washy or otherwise unsure of yourself, the customer service representative will likely baulk at your request. If you sound confident and certain that the charges should be dropped, however, you will be more likely to get the results you are looking for. Just be certain to come to the conversation with plenty of information to back up your argument and be willing to take your request to the next level if necessary.
Have any of you tried any special techniques that helped you get fees dropped by your credit card issuer?
