It seems like the frauds and scams never stop coming. One in particular that’s been hitting credit card customers hard lately is from a company called ICH Services. Bogus charges from ICH Services have started to appear on people’s debit and credit card statements, but the charged amounts were so small that most people didn’t question or even notice the charges. From what I understand, the charges made were being billed in $9.95 increments from ICH Services, an apparent Pittsburgh-based consulting firm, which has totally denied any involvement in the scam.
When victims call the number on the back of the credit card with questions or to simply cancel the card, the “customer service representative” asks the victim for his or her name, date of birth, and social security number so the account can be “brought up” in the system, duping the unsuspecting customers into giving out sensitive personal information. Some victims have simply just mistakenly paid the bill because they think they may have forgotten about signing up for the card. Either way, the thief wins. Remember, experts approximate that credit card fraud costs nearly $500 million per year. While it isn’t necessarily common to be taken advantage of in this manner, it’s not a rare occurrence either.
Be diligent about monitoring your financial activities and watch for any bogus charges or anything that might seem even just a bit odd. You need to be careful with phone calls, snail mail, and e-mail because these crafty thieves use every possible method available to them and their methods are ever evolving.
