During the time that you are in college, you are probably going to at least consider getting a part-time job to assist you with paying your expenses during school. One of the job opportunities that will be open to you when you start searching is the opportunity to work for a credit card company. In most cases, this would be to do sales work but you may be hired to do general customer service or even to do debt collection calling. Many students will immediately skip over the option of working for a credit card company because these specific jobs aren’t appealing to them. However, working for a card issuer can be a terrific experience for you as a consumer so it’s something that you may want to consider while you’re in college
This type of important credit card insight doesn’t apply just to the limited situation of debt collection either. Every aspect of the credit card business that you have exposure to will give you insight into the operation of the credit card company. You will gain first-hand knowledge about the right things to say when dealing with customer service representatives, the types of positions in the company (the who’s who) and the truth behind the offers that are made as part of the sales pitches of the credit card company. Having this information first-hand is going to make you a savvier credit card consumer, something that can be extremely valuable to learn during the college years when you are just starting to form important financial habits.
Of course, there will also be other benefits to working at a credit card company during your college years. For one thing, you’re going to get the paycheck. In comparison to other college jobs – such as student work jobs or fast food service jobs – credit card company positions tend to pay well. Additionally, credit card companies are used to working with students and therefore tend to be flexible about scheduling around classes. Plus you might be able to score a credit card with good terms just by working for the company. No one is suggesting that you have to spend the rest of your life working in the credit card industry but if you’re looking for a good job during college then it’s definitely one to think about.
