The Discover® Open Road Card is a cash back rewards credit card that was designed with the traveler in mind. Rather than focusing on airline miles, however, the card offers special incentives for those who prefer traveling by car.
As with other Discover rewards cards, the Discover Open Road Card offers .25 percent cash back on the first $3,000 spent each year with the card. Thereafter, cardholders receive at least 1 percent cash back on all other purchase. Purchases made at gas stations and restaurants, however, receive a 2 percent Cashback Bonus on the first $250 spent each billing period. After that, the regular 1 percent bonus applies. Discover Open Road Card cardholders also periodically receive 5 percent Cashback Bonuses on specific types of purchases, such as theme parks and hotels. Furthermore, cardholders can earn anywhere from 5 to 20 percent in Cashback Bonuses when making purchases at the ShopDiscover online mall. As an added bonus, cardholders receive a $150 Restaurant.com gift certificate after making their first purchase with the card.
Unlike some cash back credit cards, the Cashback Bonuses earned with Discover Open Road Card never expire. Furthermore, there are no limits on the bonuses that can be earned each year with the card. When it comes time to redeem the bonuses that are earned, cardholders can choose from a variety of different options. These include receiving a statement credit, instant eCertificates, gift cards and cash.
In addition to its appealing rewards program, the Discover Open Road Card also offers the option of customizing the card design. Cardholders have a wide variety of different card designs to select from, including landscapes, pets, fine art, monograms and more. The card is also available in a number of earth-friendly designs on biodegradable cards. The card also features a number of perks that are attractive to the frequent traveler, including up to $500,000 in flight accident insurance, auto rental insurance and purchase protection.
While there is no annual fee associated with the Discover Open Road Card, there are fees associated with balance transfers and cash advances. With balance transfers, cardholders are charged 3 percent of the transferred amount. With cash advances, cardholders are charged the greater of $10 or 5 percent of the amount advanced. Cardholders who travel to foreign countries should also expect to pay a 2 percent fee, while those who make a late payment can expect to be charged a fee of up to $35.
