Editor's Review:
Using a prepaid debit card can be a great way to prevent overspending or getting buried in debt. At the same time, one of these prepaid cards still provides you with the convenience of paying with a credit card and come with several of the same benefits that are typically associated with credit cards. If this is the sort of card you are looking for, you should take a good look at the Millennium Advantage Pre-Paid MasterCard®.
Like most prepaid debit cards, the Millennium Advantage Pre-Paid MasterCard® is designed for those that have less than perfect credit and, as a result, have difficulty getting a traditional unsecured credit card. Therefore, with this card, you have to make prepayments on the card prior to using it. The money you deposit onto the card then becomes your credit line, allowing you to make purchases up to the amount you have loaded onto the card.
Loading funds onto this card is quite simple. In fact, you can make account-to-account transfers over the Internet. Or, you can choose to send payments by mail or load money onto the card through one of Millenium’s authorized load partners. Regardless of how you choose to load funds onto the card, there is a $1 charge for each loading transaction. The maximum amount of funds that can be charged to the card at any given time is $2,500, but there are no minimum amounts.
As is usually the case with these types of cards, there are additional fees associated that each potential cardholder needs to be aware of prior to applying. For starters, you will have to pay an initial activation fee of $99.00 in order to obtain the card and a monthly participation fee of $5.95. Over the year, this adds up to $71.40. So, for the first year of card membership, you will incur $170.40 in fees.
If you don't use your card for a period of 60 days, you'll be charged a $3.00 monthly inactivity fee. In addition, if you choose to pay your bill over the phone, you will be charged a $0.75 fee for each transaction. If you use an ATM to inquire about your balance, you will also be charged a $0.75 fee. In addition, calling the customer service number to inquire about your balance will result in a $0.50 fee and you will be charged $1 for every minute you talk with a customer service representative. If you lose your card or if it is stolen, you will also be charged a $9.95 fee to get a new one.
In addition to the fees required, the Millennium Advantage Pre-Paid MasterCard® has the disadvantage of not reporting your activity to the credit bureaus. Therefore, using this card will not help you reestablish or build your credit.
