Editor's Review:
The Citi® Upromise® Card, which is issued by Citibank, is a reward credit cards that is specifically geared toward those individuals who wish to save money for college while receiving all of the benefits commonly associated with Platinum card status.
Like many reward credit cards, the Citi® Upromise® Card pays cardholders back for the many they spend using the card. In fact, cardholders earn a 10% on purchases made at over 7,000 different grocery store and drugstore items. In addition, cardholders receive a 2% rebate on gas purchases made at Exxon and Mobil locations and another 1% rebate on all other purchases. Unlike many other reward credit cards, however, this money goes specifically toward saving for college.
The rewards program of the Citi® Upromise® Card helps cardholders save for college by investing the money earned back into a tax-advantaged college savings plan that is managed by top investment firms. The maximum amount of rebates a cardholder can earn from the 1% college savings portion of the program is $300. The rebates from the 10% drugstore and grocery items and the 2% from gas purchases, however, do not have a cap.
The Upromise program is a free service that works in cooperation with this reward credit card. It allows for individuals to save for college in a unique way. There are several reputable companies that participate in the Upromise program. Shopping at these stores provides cardholders with the maximum benefits associated with the program.
In addition to being one of the best reward credit cards available, the Citi® Upromise® Card provides additional features that are quite attractive. For instance, the card provides up to $1,000,000 in travel accident insurance, auto rental insurance, discounts on auto rentals, and a variety of other travel and emergency assistance services. The card also offers extended warranty for purchases, purchase protection, protection from liability for unauthorized transactions, and fraud and security protection services, including an optional personal photo on the card.
The Citi® Upromise® Card offers an excellent introductory offer, particularly for a reward credit card. For the first 12 months of membership, cardholders enjoy a 0.00% APR on all balance transfers made during that time period. After the introductory period is complete, the variable APR for purchases, cash advances, and balance transfers is based on the Prime Rate.
