Editor's Review:
The Citi® mtvU™ Platinum Select® Visa® Card for College Students is a student credit card that offers a unique reward program that awards you for getting good grades and for using your credit wisely. This card is one of Citibank's better student credit cards.
Through the reward program, cardholders earn one point for general purchases and five points for every dollar spent at movie theaters, restaurants, bookstores, record stores, and video rentals. You can also qualify for 25 award points when you make your card payments on time and you don't surpass the credit limit on your card. The card also features a 10% discount on purchases made at the MTV New York City and MTV online stores. Depending on your GPA, you can also qualify for anywhere between 250 and 2,000 points twice a year depending on the student's GPA (beginning at 2.5). These points can be redeemed for tickets to the mtvU Woodie Awards, VIP status at mtvU's Sprink Break, gift cards, CDs, and airline tickets.
This card has no annual fee, and there is a 0% introductory rate for the first 7 months on purchases (if you qualify based on your application and credit history) an exceptional benefit for a student credit card of this type.
There are some things to be aware of about this card, starting with the interest rate. The APR on purchases and balance transfers is slightly above the average for comparable student credit cards. So if you plan on carrying a revolving balance, you would probably be better suited with a student credit card that has a comparably lower APR. Also keep in mind that there will be a minimum APR rate "floor" of 19.99% on all cash advances. Lastly, there is a maximum 75,000 point yearly limit or "ceiling" on the number of points that you can earn, and points will expire after five years if not redeemed.
