Editor's Review:
The Discover® Open Road(SM) Card for Students is a gas rewards card which is specifically designed for students. This is a credit card which allows you to earn points on all purchases with a higher point value assigned to the purchase of gas or equipment for auto repairs. Rewards are given in the form of rebates which offer cash back towards the purchase of your gas or auto maintenance supplies. Additional rewards are associated with this card. However, the card is considered to have a high interest rate and so is only right for those students who are responsible in paying back their balance in full each month.
The rewards on the Discover® Open Road(SM) Card for Students are designed to offer maximum returns on purchases of gas and auto repair equipment. There is five percent cash rebate on all gas and auto repair purchases that are made using the card. In other words, you get $5 back for every $100 of gas that you put into your car. You also earn cash back on the card for non-gas purchases, however this amount is limited. If you spend more than $3000 on the card on non-gas purchases, you get 1% cash back. Less than $3000 earns you only a fraction of a percentage back on the card. In other words, the Discover® Open Road(SM) Card for Students really is designed to maximize your cash back opportunities only on gas purchases.
In addition to the cash back that is earned towards gas on this card, there are other benefits. You may use your rebates for certain other limited purchases including discount store purchases and stores which accept Discover Card gift certificates. You will also get some amount of credit card protection including that there is no liability to you if there are unauthorized transactions made on the card. The benefits of the card are basic and comparable to other average cards of this kind.
There is no annual fee associated with the Discover® Open Road(SM) Card for Students. There is also a six month introductory rate of 0% on purchases which makes this card appealing to students who are seeking to make a big purchase at the initial time of qualifying for the card. However, the interest rate after this introductory period is considered to be high in comparison with comparable cards. Therefore this card is only good for students who pay their balance off in full each month. Responsible students who spend a lot of money on gas and are likely to spend more than $3000 per year on other purchases may find that the gas rebate rewards on this card are worth the card’s high interest rate and minimal cash back on purchases.
