Celebrate 2012 in Style With a Brand New Credit Card

Now that the holidays are over, it’s time for Americans to start thinking about their New Year’s resolutions. Instead of watching the ball drop while pledging once again to lose weight and call your grandmother on Tuesdays, why not resolve to strengthen your credit rating this year with a new credit card?

Consumers can expect a whole new generation of cards in 2012, and the rewards systems and APRs they feature have us salivating. Here are a few of our favorite pieces of plastic to sign up for in the upcoming year:

  • Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card. If you’re trying to shed a few pounds this January, you should really check out the Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card. It offers 5% cash back on all fitness club, health care and utilities purchases until the end of March. After that, you’ll get 5% cash back in other useful categories like gas and groceries every three months. The card doesn’t charge an annual fee, and you’ll even get $200 in bonus cash just for opening an account. Now that’s a deal that’s sure to get your heart racing.
  • United MileagePlus Explorer Card. If you prefer to fly on one airline when you travel, you can’t go wrong with the United MileagePlus Explorer Card. Cardholders get their first year free, a 40000-mile signing bonus and two reward miles for every $1 spent on travel. Additionally, you’ll get to enjoy perks like priority boarding, access to the United Executive Lounge in terminals and a free checked bag for every flight.
  • Discover Student. A lot of people will be applying for their first credit cards in 2012, and there’s no better card for building your credit score than the Discover Student. Unlike many introductory credit cards, the Discover Student Card features a rewards system that gives cardholders a 5% cash-back bonus in categories that change every three months, and it also offers 20% cash back when shopping through Discover’s online retail site. On top of that, you’ll never pay an annual fee, and you won’t even have to pay interest on your purchases for the first nine months that the account is open.

While many new credit cards will be introduced in 2012, these four pieces of plastic are the cream of the crop. The rewards systems they offer to travelers and the cash-back bonuses they give everyone else make them excellent tools for building a solid credit score this January.
