RACINE, Wisc.- At most county offices, you must be prepared to pay in cash, as many do not accept debit or credit cards. That is the case in Racine County according to Register of Deeds, Tyson Fettes. Fettes hopes this will be changing by the end of the year. Currently, he has to tell most customers where the nearest ATM is located for those coming in asking for copies of birth or marriage certificates.
Not all offices in Racine County are open to allowing credit and debit cards. According to Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen, her office does not accept card payments and there is no plan to look into the option. Christensen states it is because of the added fees to use credit and debit cards and the fact that for payments for things like marriage and fishing licenses, the county keeps some money and sends some to the state. It is an easier process to complete when only dealing with cash.
