American Express was
first established in 1850 in New York City as an express delivery business that
specialized in shipping larger freight parcels and valuables, such as jewelry
and expensive merchandise. The rapidly growing company soon discovered that it
was making far more money doing interbank transfers for banks and financial
institutions who coveted their dependable, highly secure delivery service, which
was far more reliable than the newly created U.S. Postal Service. Recognizing a
great opportunity, American Express started issuing money orders to compete with
their banking customers and soon thereafter started providing travel related
services, primarily in the form of traveler’s checks for luxury steamship
passengers.
Then in the late 1950’s, American Express issued its very
first credit card and within five
years had issued more than 1 million cards worldwide. Since then, American
Express has grown at an incredible pace and by 2005 made up almost 25% of all
credit card transactions made in the U.S.
Today, American Express is
firmly established itself one of the largest global financial services
companies, one of the world’s most widely recognized brands and one of the
world’s leading providers of credit services. The company has one of the deepest
credit card and charge card product lines for corporations, small businesses and
consumers of any card issuer in the market.
American Express has every
type of credit and charge card imaginable that are loaded with features
including 0% APR
benefits, generous cash back
rebates, extended balance
transfer offers and access to the Membership Rewards program, one of the
best rewards program’s in the entire industry. Additionally, American Express
has a full line of small business
credit cards for business owners as well as corporate charge cards to choose
from.
The
company has formed key strategic alliances in the airline, banking, and retail
industries, resulting in the expansion of its premium product and service
offerings to their customers. In fact, with Amex’s strategic airline alliances,
customers have access to 11 frequent flyer
miles programs at the same time.
One of the biggest benefits of
being a card member is the excellent customer service that the company offers;
agents are available twenty-four hours a day and can help with things like
getting cash from an ATM in a quick pinch, or helping with roadside assistance
if you need it.
